Product Testing

A variety of products are made to serve electrostatically sensitive environments.  These products need to be tested to determine whether they are qualified for sale and use as “ESD safe” products.  The Test Lab at Electro-Tech Systems fulfills the testing needs of manufacturers and quality teams to ensure that these products perform as required by industry standards.

Footwear and Flooring

Footwear and Floor Testing is used to determine the suitability of materials for grounding personnel through their feet as they stand or walk in a static-safe environment. While this may seem obvious, it is also challenging to acquire the equipment and trained personnel required to perform such testing. A full-sized, environmentally- conditioned room is required to meet certain test criteria, and ETS is ready to fulfill this need.

Glove Testing

Assemblers of electronic components in cleanrooms need gloves for protection from the chemicals used in the manufacturing process. Likewise, the assemblies these workers handle will need protection from the naturally occurring voltages generated by the human body. Gloves used in cleanrooms are an essential control for hazards such as electrostatic discharge (ESD). If the gloves worn by cleanroom workers are too insulative, they can fail to be properly grounded and build up voltage on the surface. The result can be a series of discharges that could catastrophically damage electronic components.

Device Testing

Device testing consists of determining the survivability of component-level devices under various voltages. For any chip manufacturer (or anyone working with those products), this is useful information to have on the factory floor, because if the sensitivity of the product is known, all downstream handling can be adjusted to prevent destruction of sensitive products. Customers can choose to test at a variety of voltages and pin combinations, depending on their needs. We actively serve a range of semiconductor and electronics companies worldwide, and the fact that ETS designs and builds much of the equipment used in the testing gives us an extensive base of knowledge for this analysis.

System Testing

Sometimes a completed System needs to be stressed for survivability testing. For certain life-sustaining machines, this is a legal requirement. There are different thresholds of failure depending on the type of machine in order to answer key Questions. These questions include, “Does my system reboot if a discharge of a certain voltage occurs?” Or “Does the memory recorded on my system get wiped out in an ESD event?” And most importantly, “If my system is a life-sustaining critical machine, does it interrupt operations in the event of electrostatic discharge?”

Worksurface

Make certain that your work area is safe for handling sensitive items. To do so, a very straightforward resistance test can put your worries to rest. To address the concerns of your customers, the experienced staff at ETS can act as a third-party test lab.

Hand Tools

A variety of hand tools are used in ESD-sensitive applications. The primary test method is to place electrodes in such a way as to simulate the primary conduction path from the hand of the user to the tip of the tool. Some hand tools, such as solder irons have written test standards, but most hand tools simply need to be tested in such a way as to allow repeatable, accurate results.

USPS Mailer Wraps

Historically, mailer wraps have been a painful source of electrostatic discharge in rapid-sort processes at post-office processing centers and other locations around the world. To minimize the effect of static discharge, the United States Postal Service requires mailer wraps to undergo a series of tests before they can be used to ship magazines, catalogues, books, and other materials. Electro-Tech Systems has been performing these tests for years.
